In Memory of Dr B. D. Sharma
We from Adivasi Aikya Vedika , and all other members of the Food Sovereignty Alliance- India, condole the passing of Dr B.D. Sharma, a brave supporter, activist and ideologue of the Adivasi movement. We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Dr B.D. Sharma.
Dr B. D. Sharma walked with us to question the continuing hegemony of the State and the process of internal colonization of Adivasi homelands. His resolute belief and commitment to our struggles for decentralized local self- governance, anchored by adivasi customary governance councils, translated into powerful legal instruments such as the Panchayat (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996, (PESA) and the Forests Rights Act, 2006. We recall his inspiring journeys throughout Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Adivasi territories, where he untiringly campaigned on self- rule with the stirring slogan “Maava Nate, Maava Raj !”.
He joined us in relentlessly challenging the State’s refusal to honour and uphold the supreme powers of Adivasi Gram Sabhas, to govern our territories, lives and resources.
At this historical moment, when our territories are under severe attack by forces of capitalism and right wing Hindu fascism, we resolve to continue our struggle, and carry forward the visions and unfinished dreams of our friend and comrade Dr B.D. Sharma.
Johar Dr B.D. Sharma ! Long Live Peoples Struggles !
Jai Adivasi ! Jai Bhuthalli !
